Kitch's Top 10 Classic Australian Rock Songs - #10 "Help Is On It's Way"

Australia’s musical history is a rich one, with many of our best finding huge success on the international stage. The 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s featured some of the country’s best rock bands pumping out classic songs that are still favourites to this day. With Australia Day on our doorstep, what better time is there than now to count down my Top Ten classic Australian songs:

"Help Is On It's Way" – Little River Band

Writer(s): Glenn Shorrock
Album: Diamantina Cocktail
Released: 1977
Peak Chart Position: #1

What happened with the licensing for so many great songs, and, indeed, the band’s name, overshadows the great catalogue of songs that the Little River Band, with their classic line-up of Glen Shorrock, Graeham Goble and Beeb Birtles, amongst others, put together, and ‘Help Is On It’s Way’ is right at the top, as one of my favourite LRB songs.

Diamantina Cocktail – a drink invented in the Diamantina River region of Queensland, featured condensed milk, Bundaberg Rum and, unbelievably, an emu’s egg – was the highest-charted of LRB’s firs three albums, propelled to those heights thanks to ‘Help Is On It’s Way’, written by the band’s then-lead singer, Shorrock. It was the fourth-highest selling single attributed to an Australian group in 1977.
